Tungnath Trek Package
Overview
The Tungnath trek, nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India, is a revered pilgrimage and a breathtaking adventure. It leads to the Tungnath Temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world, situated at an altitude of approximately 3,680 meters (12,073 feet). Often combined with a further ascent to Chandrashila Peak, this trek offers a harmonious blend of spiritual solace and panoramic Himalayan vistas, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers.
Trail and Landscapes:
The journey from Chopta to Tungnath is a visual delight. Initially, the path meanders through dense rhododendron and pine forests, especially vibrant with blooming flowers during spring (April-June). The air is crisp, filled with the scent of wildflowers, and the gentle chirping of birds creates a calming ambiance. As you ascend, the tree line gradually recedes, giving way to expansive alpine meadows (Bugyals). These open spaces offer stunning, uninterrupted views of the majestic Himalayan range. The trail, though mostly gradual, has some steeper sections, particularly as you near the temple.

Key Attractions
Tungnath Temple: This ancient stone temple, believed to be over 1,000 years old, holds immense spiritual significance as one of the Panch Kedar temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Its unique North Indian architectural style and serene setting against the backdrop of towering peaks make it a powerful place of worship and contemplation.
Chandrashila Peak: Translating to “Moon Rock,” Chandrashila is the summit above Tungnath. The final ascent is steeper and involves some rocky terrain, but the reward is a 360-degree panoramic view of prominent Himalayan peaks. On a clear day, you can witness the grandeur of Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar Peak, Bandarpunch, and even Gangotri and Yamunotri peaks. The sunrise from Chandrashila is particularly renowned for its mesmerizing hues painting the snow-capped mountains.
Deoria Tal: While not directly on the Chopta-Tungnath trail, Deoria Tal is a beautiful, serene lake located near Sari village, often included in the Tungnath trek itinerary. Known for its crystal-clear waters that perfectly reflect the surrounding peaks, especially Chaukhamba, it’s an ideal spot for camping, photography, and birdwatching. The walk to Deoria Tal through dense forests is equally enchanting.
Chopta: As the base camp, Chopta itself is a charming destination with its rolling green meadows and dense forests. It’s a great place to acclimatize, enjoy nature walks, and indulge in birdwatching (Himalayan Monal, Pheasants, various eagles can be spotted).
Best Time to Trek: The best time for the Tungnath trek is from April to June and September to November. During these months, the weather is pleasant, skies are clear, and the trails are accessible. Spring offers blooming rhododendrons, while autumn brings crisp air and vibrant post-monsoon greenery. While challenging, the winter months (December to March) offer a magical snow-covered landscape, attracting experienced trekkers.
